Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

4th September 2022

‘None of you can become my disciples if you do not give up all your possessions.’ Luke 14.33.  Image by Revd Jess, see Bible Art below for commentary.

We begin the church season of Creationtide this Sunday, which lasts until St Francis’s Day, 4th October.  There is a focus at this time on the environment that sustains us all. As we face the dual catastrophes of the climate and biodiversity emergencies it has become vital that Christians take seriously what is known as the ‘fifth mark of mission’ in the Anglican Communion: ‘To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.’

This year we are giving particular attention to pollinating insects, with a joyful community art display in church.  It both celebrates the wonder of our insect life and highlights the widespread losses of pollinators in the UK.

We don’t have an all-age service this Sunday, and instead families are warmly invited to attend our afternoon Pet Blessing service at 3pm.   We have our Taizé for Healing service this Sunday at 6pm, which explores the sea, something that is important to us all on Shoreham Beach. We hope you can join us for Creationtide.

Collect

God of constant mercy, who sent your Son to save us: remind us of your goodness,

increase your grace within us, that our thankfulness may grow, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Deuteronomy 30.15-20, Psalm 1, Philemon 1-21, Luke 14.25-33

An Invitation to Revd Andrew’s licensing The churchwardens of the benefice invite you to the licensing of Revd Andrew Bennison as Vicar of New Shoreham and Shoreham Beach by Rt Revd Dr Martin Warner 3rd October 7.30pm, at St Mary de Haura, New Shoreham. Harvest Lunch We are having a community lunch after the harvest festival service on 2nd October. The food is being prepared by Lesley - leek and potato soup, baguette and butter, followed by apple crumble with custard or cream. Gluten free available. The price is £4.50 per person and children £3.00, with any left-over money going to the church. If you would like to attend, please see Lesley at the end of the 10am service to sign-up. Please bring your own crockery and cutlery, to save us washing up!

Pet Service We are really looking forward to our pet blessing service on Sunday 4th September at 3pm. Bring your pets, photos of pets or favourite animals, or cuddly toys. It is followed by cakes (sold in support of the St Francis Fund) and refreshments in the hall. There will be a collection for the Dogs Trust, an animal welfare charity in our parish. We will also hear from a Dogs Trust volunteer about how things are going for the charity.

Saturday morning meditation on a break Saturday morning meditation is taking an annual break 27th August until 17th September (back in church 24th September).

Ride and Stride Saturday 10th September

Raise money for the Sussex Historic Churches Trust by walking or cycling (or horse riding) to local participating churches. It’s not a race, but a fun event. E-bikes are welcome. We take a leisurely route along quiet country lanes avoiding traffic. Jonathan Marshall will start around 9am from the church and will finish back in Shoreham by lunchtime, for a pub lunch. It would be nice if you could join him. If you’d like to participate, sponsorship forms are at the back of the church. For more information speak to Jonathan Marshall. Telephone 07889171817.
