Christ the King

20th November 2022

'

We conclude the Christian year with a celebration of Christ as King – a king who was mocked on the cross and a king of the universe. The day is also known as ‘stir-up Sunday’, after the words used in the post-communion prayer: ‘Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may by you be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord’.

We pray that we will be ‘stirred up’ by the Spirit to become kingdom builders here on earth. It is also the time when Christmas puddings are traditionally stirred up and made! We hope you can join us.

Collect

God the Father,

help us to hear the call of Christ the King

and to follow in his service,

whose kingdom has no end;

for he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, one glory.

Readings

Jeremiah 23.1-6, Psalm 46, Colossians 1.11-20, Luke 23.33-43

Taizé for Healing Service marking the start of Advent.

Advent Course Revd Jane and John Watters are running an Advent course this year, using the Archbishop of York’s recommended book, ‘Sleepers Wake’ by the former Bishop of Salisbury Nicholas Holtam, who was also the Church of England’s lead bishop for the environment.  The book offers daily reflections to explore the reality of climate change and how Advent is an opportunity for us to wake up, sense the urgency and begin to make radical change. Revd Jane and John will run a group on Zoom at 7.30pm on the following Thursdays: 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd December.

Sign-up sheets will be available on Sunday. There are just a few places left. St Mary de Haura is also running an in-person group on Saturday lunchtimes, and there may be spaces if you are interested.

You can find out more about the book here: https://spckpublishing.co.uk/sleepers-wake

It is also offered as part of The Big Church Read (https://thebigchurchread.co.uk/) with video talks by the author to guide you through the Advent journey.

Transition Town and Climate Conversations at the Good Shepherd 6.30pm, Wednesday 30th November Transition Town is a national movement of local communities coming together to work towards an environmentally sustainable world. Revd Jane has partnered up with our local Shoreham group to offer an evening looking at climate change. How are you feeling about climate change? Do you want to feel empowered and more positive? ‘Climate Conversations’ is way to share a conversation, giving us courage and hope. The evening is led by Jo Peters, a certified Climate Coach, using playful and thought-provoking exercises in small supportive groups. The event is free, but donations are welcome to the church to cover heating costs. All welcome.  To book your place email: jopeterscoaching@gmail.com

And finally…

The new votive candle stand was well used and looked beautiful at the recent Memorial Healing Service. It was purchased with a legacy from Eileen House, a much-loved former member of our church, and we shall bless it at our service this Sunday.

Blessings and prayers for you all this week. I work half-time and the days I am usually available are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (morning).   Revd Jane
