Mothering Sunday

19th March 2023

We celebrate Mothering Sunday at 10am this week with an all-age service. We give thanks for mothers and all those who provide care for us.  Mothering Sunday occurs halfway through Lent and is also known as Refreshment Sunday. It’s a time when we might relax some of our Lenten observances. It is also one of only two Sundays in the church year when rose coloured vestments can be worn! We hope you will join us for this joyful celebration.

Collect

God of love,

passionate and strong,

tender and careful:

watch over us and hold us

all the days of our life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Exodus 2.1-10,
Psalm 34.11-20 or Psalm 127.1-4
2 Corinthians 1.3-7 or Colossians 3.12-17, John 19.25-27

Pop up sale of Easter cards and craft items after the 10am church service in the hall on 19th and 26th March.

Shoe Boxes Needed for the children’s Good Friday Easter Garden service. If you have any shoe boxes to give away, please leave them at the back of church. Thank you.

Coronation screening We are exploring the possibility of offering a benefice public screening of the Coronation in the church hall on Saturday 6th May. For this to be possible we need volunteers to manage the screening. Do you have a large tv screen or projector that could be used? We also need help with teas and coffees, and possibly co-ordinating a bring your own picnic. If you can volunteer, please speak to the wardens Angela and Kay.

Celtic Evening Prayer takes place every
Wednesday evening on Zoom. We are usually a group of about five people. Why not join us and make it part of your Lenten practice this year. It is a great way to end a day. The Zoom link is at the end of the newsletter.

Choir news The next rehearsal for the Occasional Choir will be Monday at 10.30am in the church. We will be rehearsing a special item for Easter. Please come if you can.  There will also be a rehearsal for our church choir on Thursday at 6pm. New members welcome. Please call Fiona if you wish to discuss this on 07879 378678.

Check out your carbon footprint and find out how much you are personally impacting on carbon emissions. Jan Hundertpfund is offering a carbon footprint consultation over coffee in the church hall after the 10am service. For the next few Sundays he will be available with his iPad to help anyone who is interested in learning more about how they can reduce their ecological impact. The newly formed Eco Church group met last week, and this is one of the new initiatives to come out of that group. Thanks to Jan for offering this.

Beach Social Café Every Tuesday 10.30am to 12noon. All welcome.

Palm Sunday Here’s a photo of Leo, a  donkey from East Clayton Farm. He will be joining us for our Palm Sunday procession this year! We will also have a Lent bread and soup lunch together in the hall after the 10am Palm Sunday service, thanks to Lesley Ward for the catering. Save the date – 2nd April.

We will have butternut squash and coconut soup with baguette and butter, followed by fresh fruit salad and cream. The price is £4.50 for adults and £3.50 for children.  Please sign up with Lesley Ward after the 10am service if you’d like to come or email her directly: lesleyskitchenltd@gmail.com

APCM Our Annual Parochial Church Meeting takes place Sunday 23rd April at 11.30am. This is for the election of parochial representatives, and there is also a meeting for the election of church wardens. Full details are displayed in the church porch.

PCC Vacancies At the Annual Parochial Church Meeting we will be electing a new Parochial Church Council (PCC). There are vacancies for lay representatives. Please consider prayerfully if you could contribute your time and skills in this way and speak to Revd Jane if interested.

Electoral Roll Revision This is the time each year when we revise our electoral roll. If you have been worshipping at our church for at least the past six months and are not yet on the electoral roll, do take a form and sign up. There is a notice on the main door of the church with full information about the electoral revision and forms are at the back of church. Being on the electoral roll enables you to vote at our APCM, and it is also a sign of the health of the church. Please speak with our electoral roll officer Jenny Stride for more information.

And finally…

The pictures from the Lent art workshop are on display in the side chapel. They each depict a different wisdom saying from the desert fathers and mothers. Stop by to pause, look, and read about the earliest Christian monastic communities.  They will be on display during the rest of Lent.
