Remembrance Sunday

13th November 2022

We mark Remembrance Sunday this week, as we confront issues of war and peace. We remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. We remember the Armed Forces, and their families, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives because of conflict or terrorism. And we pray for peace and reconciliation. We hope you can join us.

Collect

Heavenly Lord, you long for the world’s salvation: stir us from apathy, restrain us from excess and revive in us new hope that all creation will one day be healed in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Malachi 4.1-2a, Psalm 98, 2 Thessalonians 3.6-13, Luke 21.5-19

COGS Fellowship Lunch Revival

20th November 2022 at Joy's, 3, Kings Walk, 12 - 4pm  After a long break due to COVID and other reasons, Joy wishes to host once more the monthly Fellowship lunch.

If you are alone or are new to the Good Shepherd and would like to get to know other members of the congregation, then join us on the 3rd Sunday of the month for a convivial lunch, followed by board-type games and ending with tea and cake to send you on your way. If interested, talk to Joy or Chris and Michael Davies after the service on Sunday.

Advent Course Revd Jane and John Watters are running an Advent course this year, using the Archbishop of York’s recommended book, ‘Sleepers Wake’ by the former Bishop of Salisbury Nicholas Holtam, who was also the Church of England’s lead bishop for the environment.  The book offers daily reflections to explore the reality of climate change and how Advent is an opportunity for us to wake up, sense the urgency and begin to make radical change. Revd Jane and John will run a group on Zoom at 7.30pm on the following Thursdays: 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd December.

Sign-up sheets will be available on Sunday. St Mary de Haura is also running an in-person group on Saturday lunchtimes, and there may be spaces if you are interested.

You can find out more about the book here: https://spckpublishing.co.uk/sleepers-wake

It is also offered as part of The Big Church Read (https://thebigchurchread.co.uk/) with video talks by the author to guide you through the Advent journey. Sheila Powell has kindly offered to order some books. Please speak with her asap if you would like a copy.

Transition Town and Climate Conversations at the Good Shepherd 6.30pm, Wednesday 30th November Transition Town is a national movement of local communities coming together to work towards an environmentally sustainable world. Revd Jane has partnered up with our local Shoreham group to offer an evening looking at climate change. How are you feeling about climate change? Do you want to feel empowered and more positive? ‘Climate Conversations’ is way to share a conversation, giving us courage and hope. The evening is led by Jo Peters, a certified Climate Coach, using playful and thought-provoking exercises in small supportive groups. The event is free, but donations are welcome to the church to cover heating costs. All welcome.  To book your place email: jopeterscoaching@gmail.com

Recycling There will be a sorting of the church recycling over coffee in the hall after the 10am Sunday service. If you can help, get your coffee and come and join in.

Advent Art Retreat Revd Jess is running one of her popular art retreats on Zoom this Advent. Contact her for information.

And finally…

The sale of Ted Young’s artwork in the hall over the weekend was a great success. It raised more than £1,200 for church funds. An astonishing achievement. Thank you Chrystabell and her team for all that they did to make this event happen. We remember Ted with gratitude and give thanks for his artistic gifts and talents.

Blessings and prayers for you all this week. I work half-time and the days I am usually available are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (morning).   Revd Jane
