Meet The Team

Reverend Jane Bartlett - Associate Vicar

Jane’s previous career was as a journalist and writer, and she also studied for an MA in Christian Spirituality. She joined us from St Mellitus College where she trained in theology, ministry and mission. She is married to John and has three young adult children.

Derek Hansen - Reader

I moved to Shoreham Beach, just opposite the Church of the Good Shepherd, in 1965 and, after a year or two  was invited to cross the road on Sunday and go to Church.    I was licensed as a Reader in 1987, and, a few years later, was appointed Archdeaconry Secretary and, later, Honorary Secretary of the Diocesan Reader's Committee.   I contributed to, and later produced, “Thought for the Day” on BBC Radio Sussex and, later, contributed to and helped present the Sunday morning programme on BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Southern Counties for a number of years. My wife Caroline, two delightful children and five grandchildren try to keep me in order.

Sally Excell - Reader, Head of Pastoral Care & Healing, Bible Study Leader

I have lived on Shoreham Beach since March 1968, first in Woodards View, then in River Close and now in Beach Road.  You either love the Beach and stay here or can't cope with the wind and move away quite quickly.  I have worshipped at the Church of the Good Shepherd for most of that time, although at times intermittently.

We experienced renewal in our Church in the early 1980s, and I was licensed as a Reader in 1988. Since that time, I have been involved in preaching, leading Bible Study and other study groups and also very involved in the Healing Ministry and pastoral visiting.  In 2004, after undergoing training, I was licensed by the Bishop of Chichester to conduct funeral services. I love being part of the Christian family at the Church of the Good Shepherd and hope that anyone reading this will be encouraged to come to join us.

Barry Ward - Treasurer

Apart from three years spent in the USA, I have lived on Shoreham Beach since the mid 1980s. I am married to Lesley and have two daughters.

I became a Christian in 2006, mainly due to the influence and enthusiasm of the people I share this page with, but also Farther Marcus Ronchetti who had a very unique way of proclaiming the Gospel. I was baptised and then, together with Lesley, confirmed at St Mary’s. I am a Choir member, Sacristan and, for two years, was Church Warden. In 2013, I took over as Treasurer.

My other interests in life are rugby (watching now) cricket, music and history. I also enjoy cooking, eating out and drinking the odd glass of wine.

Canon Tony Thompson

Over many years, I viewed Shoreham-by-Sea from the river, on countless canoeing trips. I finally came to live here, with my wife, Chris, when I retired from full-time ministry in 2003. Here at the Church of the Good Shepherd, I am happy to be able to preach, lead worship, train children in puppetry, and help with our home groups.  I have recently retired as Chairman of SEAN International (for more information, click HERE) which plays a major role in training Church leaders, by extension, in many countries around the world. In my spare time I enjoy scuba-diving, kayaking, allotment gardening, visiting our children and grand-children, and playing the piano accordion and the ukulele.
