Newsletter 7th February

Second Sunday before Lent, 7th February 2021

‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ John 1.1. A picture by Revd Jess. See below for details.

We’re now entering a short period of green Ordinary Time before we begin the purple season of Lent, from Ash Wednesday (17th February). The PCC has decided that we’ll continue to worship only online throughout February. But we hope that we’ll be able to resume in person services during March if the lockdown eases.

This Sunday we have an all age service of the Word. We’d love for our families to join us all as we focus on the reading this week from Proverbs in the Old Testament and think about wisdom. What is it and how do we find it? These are questions that are important for us all, no matter what our age.

Collect

Almighty God,

give us reverence for all creation

and respect for every person,

that we may mirror your likeness

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings

Proverbs 8.1,22-31, Psalm 104.26-37,
Colossians 1.15-20, John 1.1-14

Tea and Fellowship at 4pm helps us stay in touch during these winter months. Thank you to Judy Short for hosting these gatherings – just what we need during lockdown! Make yourself a cuppa and join on this Zoom link.

Lent Courses 2021

This year our Lent course will take place on Zoom. The five week course has been produced by the Diocese of Exeter and addresses questions like:

Where is God in the pandemic? How can I stay hopeful? Do I really love my neighbour? How can I worship when I can’t sing? There will be a time for prayer, for personal sharing and discussion. We read scripture, and watch filmed personal stories.  We think about our own stories, and how we will shape and tell them. There are three groups running over five weeks, all beginning the week of 22nd February. Your group leaders are Revd Jane, Canon Tony and Judy Short.

Mondays at 7.30pm

Wednesdays at 3.30pm

Fridays at 3.30pm.

If there is sufficient demand we might run an extra session at another time. If you’d like to sign up for one of the groups please email Revd Jane indicating your preferred group time. Email: bartlett.jane@ntlworld.com.

Each session lasts 75 minutes.  If you’d like to have a look at the excellent resources that have been produced visit:

We do hope you will decide to join us for this important time of spiritual growth together during the season of Lent.

Bible Art

Revd Jess writes about her art (see the top of this newsletter) This is such a wonderful reading, it's hard to begin to do it justice ... but the thought that was going through my mind was the relationship with the Trinity ... God spoke and there was light, then God spoke and there was ... but the God who was speaking was the god in three Persons ... so I have tried to show a tiny part of his creation ... Earth, moon, and sun. And the breath of God - which brings light and life - emanating from the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The main problem with this image is that, in order to show how all three Persons were involved, and are involved, in creation, I have ended up implying separateness, whereas the three are one.
