Good Shepherd Fundraising Banner

Chris Diebel has kindly offered to make us a new church banner, featuring the name of our church, a good shepherd and lots of sheep!   For a donation (small or large) to the church you can have embroidered onto a sheep your name, the name of family members, or someone who has died and was connected to the church.

The banner is green and can be hung regularly during part of the green Ordinary Time liturgical season and on Good Shepherd Sunday. The picture below shows a similar banner that Chris made for another church. Contact Chris if you would like to know more. Email: chrstndiebel@gmail.com

Thank you Chris for doing this for us!

Keep off the grass

Please keep off the grass in front of the church (not the car park). It has been reseeded.

Messy Church is back for Pentecost

We return to the hall for a simplified Messy Church Saturday 15th May 3pm to 5pm. The theme is Pentecost and we finish with an outdoor picnic in conjunction with the Christian Aid take-away teas. Numbers are limited so please book with Daisy. cogssundayschool10@gmail.com

Pentecost Creative Meditation Day

Revd Jess is offering an Online Pentecost creative meditation day on the 21st May, repeated on Saturday 22nd May.

Participants will need some liquid colour like food colouring, coloured ink or liquid watercolour. They will also need a roll of white loo paper, and some home-made play dough (not coloured) for which there are lots of non-cooked recipes on YouTube (eg https://youtu.be/ZgESM5j1NSI )

This day will involve a Zoom session in the morning, followed by a meditation which participants will do on their own after the Zoom session. There will be a similar kind of session in the afternoon, and a short Zoom service to finish the day.

If you are interested email Rev'd Jess (j.aidley@gmail.com) to book a place on either day.

Christian Aid Week

Saturday May 15th

Takeaway Afternoon Tea in aid of Christian Aid.

Christian aid week this year is the 10th to the 16th May.  The Church of the Good Shepherd will be organising a number of fundraising events to support the Charity.   This year the focus will be on helping the people in Kenya fight the drought that is causing hunger and thirst and providing aid to the communities to build much needed earth dams hence providing a reliable source of water.

There will be the usual red envelopes being delivered across Shoreham Beach but this year they will not be collected. There will be 4 local addresses for people to take their donations to which include the Ferry Road Post office and The Vicarage.  If anyone who is enjoying their walks on Shoreham Beach would be able to help deliver some of these envelopes please contact Jill Charlish on 07796932420.

The main fundraising event will be a delicious Takeaway Tea in a Box. These can be collected from The Church of the Good Shepherd from 2pm on Saturday May 15. See the flyer.

Please reserve your teas by 3rd May. You can donate online for your Christian Aid tea by clicking here https://www.give.net/20337197

Please put Christian Aid Tea as the reference. Thank you.

Bible Art John 15.1-8

(see picture at the top of newsletter)

This passage is such a familiar one, and yet, how familiar are we with vines if we live in this country? Very few of us have one (or more!) of our own, and hardly any of us are familiar with caring for, or pruning and grafting, vines other than watching it on television!

The great storm of 1987 brought a tree down on the vine we'd planted for the birds, and the stump wept copiously for days, and it seemed to me to mirror God weeping over us when we go astray.

In this iPad painting, as well as the dead branches which have been cut off from the life-giving fluid in the main stem, I have drawn a new young branch which has been grafted on so that it now receives that life-giving fluid and becomes truly part of the vine of Christ through the mercy of God.  As someone who grew up in an atheist family, I am profoundly grateful that God the Father not only prunes, but also grafts.

Revd Jess

Thank you

‘The Mission to Seafarers has written to thank knitters at the Church of the Good Shepherd for their generous contribution of hats, gloves and scarves, knitted during the winter months.

They are hoping to soon distribute these among seafarers as restrictions ease - they can go out to visit ships, will be able to open their Mission Centres again and ships are able to dock.

Toys needed

Can you help supply toys for the relaunch of Lamb’s Tales, our parent and toddler drop-in? We hope that Lambs Tales will soon be meeting every Friday morning in church. Before we start we need some toys and books suitable for babies and pre-school age.

If you have any toys or books that you would like to donate or if you create toys please get in touch with Daisy by emailing cogssundayschool10@gmail.com

Please note that all toys must be in good condition and safe. Hand-made toys need to be washable.  Wooden toys are especially welcomed.

 Electoral Roll

Rescheduled Annual Revision of COGS Electoral Roll
Tuesday, 23rd March until Monday, 19th April

During this period, those already on the COGS electoral roll can check their details and submit revisions if necessary — change of address, change of name, etc. Email me (GeoffHolme@yahoo.co.uk) if you wish to check your currently-held details.

People not currently on the COGS electoral roll who wish to be and who qualify should fill in an application form — available from the Vicarage or from me (16 Fowey Close) — and return it by Monday, 19th April at the latest. This will allow them to vote at the APCM.

(After the end of the revision period there is a period of 14 days — Tuesday, 20th April to Monday, 3rd May — when any errors or omissions can be corrected, but no new applicants can be added until after the APCM.) Geoff Holme (COGS Electoral Roll Office)

Shoreham Food Bank

Building work is progressing well and we look forward to a completion very soon.  Followed by a spring clean! My hours as Associate Vicar are half time and my working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and also Sunday mornings. Please do get in contact if you need any prayer or support. Blessings and prayers for you this Easter season.

HOW TO BOOK FOR SERVICES

How to book for next week’s service,

https://www.trybooking.co.uk/ZTF

  • Click on the link then follow the instructions. Booking will be open from Monday to Thursday for the following Sunday.
