FAIRTRADE @ COGS

The Church of the Good Shepherd is accredited by the Fairtrade Foundation as a Fairtrade church. For many years only Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar have been served at church events and after the Sunday morning services. In addition, we have two Traidcraft recognized ‘fair traders’ who stock and run our church Fairtrade stall. This is open for business about once every three weeks, after the main Sunday morning service. We normally stock only food items and reckon to take over £100 each time we open. However, we take considerably more in the run up to Christmas, when we try to stock value-for-money craft items as well, such as scarves, bangles and Advent calendars. We always have copies of the Traidcraft mail order catalogue available for people to borrow, in case they wish to make special orders -for birthday presents, for example; this saves you paying the normal mail order postage and packing costs!

The Church of the Good Shepherd also has a representative on the Adur Fairtrade Group steering committee. They are working towards achieving Fairtrade accreditation for Adur District, and raising awareness of trade justice issues locally. We urge you to ask for Fairtrade tea, coffee and wine when you are eating out. The Adur District Fairtrade accreditation is imminent, but we would still like to encourage more local cafés and shops to have Fairtrade goods available. Clearly, the greater the demand for Fairtrade goods we generate, the more ‘Third World’ producers and communities can benefit from this form of trade justice.

Remember, every Fairtrade purchase you make has a real impact on the lives of the producing farmers and craftsmen, their families and their communities.
